SUPPOSED TO BE -

The latest and greatest short film currently being pimped around the globe.

Directed by Justin Capes

CELEBRATE CAKE -

This was shot in a day (although the plate special effect was concocted over various weeks and note pads of ideas) and primarily made for the 60 Seconds of Fame Orange Phone competition. There are lots of Silent comedy stuff on the web but I still feel that people miss the magic of what they are trying to reference and have not really studied the golden oldies and the masters Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd. Chaplin in particular played up the surreal edge film could achieve, giving life to the inanimate and like a dreamer implementing the wrong object for the wrong activity. My idea was simple and visual, plus it was advised not to move the camera too much as mobile movies cannot handle it (although the overall winner had the camera constantly moving.), this again with the sound limitations of a phone leant itself well to the visual simplicity and wit of a silent comedy. Anyway it qualified in the regions top five and was played on the BBC News, and I am starting to like it.

ART IS ALIVE-

This is my first short film, shot in my spare time whilst working my fingers to the bone at my dull day job. Luckily I did not have to use any of my imagination or talent at work so it festered into this project which I shot in 2 weeks. This is the first time I have ever asked for extra's and directed crew/volunteers, the resulting zombie shoot was far too much fun.

The rest of the film however was shot in seclusion which helped with the isolated tone of the film. I was however exhausted by it.

THE EXPERIMENTAL SHORTS -

To begin with I stuck to one minute productions with my hand held camera. I wanted to concentrate on style and what exactly you could and could not achieve with DV, especially a mid range Panasonic.

Sound was also something I wanted to test before actually performances were taped. It was pretty clear I needed an additional Microphone.

The first two are really games of fast editing and speeded up action. Editing is such an important part of film making you can change everything and take the pictures in a new direction if you have the talent and imagination. I also discovered what could be implied by the cutting but not shown, a good example is the spoon being taken from the drawer and then cuts to the draw being slammed shut. The influence of Svankmajer and Sam Raimi are clear for all to see.

I wanted to exercise the demons of replicating cool visual stuff I had seen and worked out how to do. Once out of my system I can concentrate on what I actually want to achieve as an individual film maker. Contra zoom was an addiction for me with my old 8mm video camera, now I actually loath contra zoom in movies.

The third film 'The Storm' is mainly about sound pacing of sound with images (lots of reverse sound too). I also discovered how to make lightning, real lightning that is, look really fake, which I am sure is a useless piece of technique.
